To the Olympic Park
Following the announcement of plans to replace the Disability Living Allowance, eliminating benefits to 500,000 people via new criteria and the already-controversial Work Capability Assessments, and concerns that the change will undermine the legacy of the Paralypmic Games, public transit access to the Olympics for wheelchair users is put to the test (autostart video). For reference, the TfL suggests form Trafalgar Square to Stratford takes 35-40 minutes without accessibility considerations and approximately 50 minutes using wheelchair accessible routes. For further reference, the Disability Living Allowance and its replacement, the Personal Independence Payment. link

California Resale Royalty Act Struck Down... pending appeal
California Resale Royalty Act declared unconstitutional. The only Droit De Suite Law in the U.S. is now defunct. It was signed into being by Gov. Jerry Brown in 1976..... previously Judge Jacqueline H. Nguyen of U.S. District Court, Central District of California struck down the California Resale Royalty Act last week because it violated the U.S. Constitution's Interstate Commerce Clause.
Even though artists all over the country qualify for resale royalties, only about 400 painters and sculptors have received a total of $328,000 in resale royalties since the Resale Royalties Act took effect....
....The curious thing is that it took 35 years for the Resale Royalties Act to be struck down as unconstitutional. As Nguyen recounts in her ruling, California's legislative counsel wrote an opinion letter way back in the 1970s, when the state was drafting the law, noting that if California attempted to extend resale royalties to sales outside of the state, the act would be invalid under the Commerce Clause.
Background on the case here, here, and here.. link

"Some men are coming to kill us..."
The teaser trailer for the twenty-third James Bond feature, Skyfall has arrived. Temporarily derailed because of MGM's bankruptcy, the movie will hit screens in November, just under the wire for the fiftieth anniversary of the Bond franchise on screen. Daniel Craig's third outing as Bond features 007 going up against Javier Bardem's Raoul Silva after a brutal attack leaves MI6 in shambles. The movie is directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes with cinematographer Roger Deakins, noted for his work with both Mendes and the Coen Brothers, behind the camera. Longtime Bond fans may be happy to know that alongside Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney's appearances in the supporting cast, Ben Whishaw will be playing Q, in the character's first return to the franchise since the Casino Royale reboot. link

Ramblin' Jack Elliott at Old City Hall, Redding California, 1988
Ramblin' Jack Elliott at Old City Hall, Redding California, 1988This is Ramblin' Jack in his prime. Friend of the Devil; San Francisco Bay Blues; Plains of the Buffalo; Don't Think Twice, It's Alright; South Coast; All My Trials; Talkin' Fishin' Hole; Railroad Bill; Cool Water; Me & Bobby McGhee, Philadelphia lawyer; Salt Pork, West Virginia and a 20 minute version of 912 Greens, one of only two songs he ever wrote. I first heard it at the Sky River Rock Festival in 1968. It brought tears to my eyes. I have been a fan ever since.
And that was the short version.
And the stories he tells are the frosting* on the cake -- you will understand where he got the cognomen Ramblin'...
*It's a lot of cake and a lot of frosting: the food is excellent and the portion is large. link
